Provenance: James Adam & Sons 12 April 2006. Thence sold to a private collector; from whom purchased by the current owner.  Only 964 of these medals were issued making them the scarcest of the awards presented to participants in the fight for independence. Kathleen Clarke, a founding member of Cumann na mBan, wife of Tom Clarke and sister of Ned Daly was one of the most senior participants in the 1916 Rising to receive this award in 1966. Her role in the aftermath of the rebellion in re-establishing the IRB and her involvement in the Irish National Aid Fund served to hold the movement for independence together. In 1918, during the German Plot, she was arrested and imprisoned in Holloway Prison for eleven months. As the Irish War of Independence raged she served as a District Judge on the Republican Courts in Dublin. Kathleen Clarke was a founding member of Fianna Fail and briefly served as a TD in 1927.
